After having time to calm down after Yesterdays game, and looking back over Englands World Cup, I have come to the following conclusion:

Being Knocked Out
Ronaldo - So we have our villain. England have been given the perfect excuse here to once again blame somebody else for our downfall, maybe what he did was wrong, but lets be fair, if one of the Portugese players had stamped on one of our players (intentional or not) im quite sure there would have been a few English players suround the ref to question his desision. I agree that the red card was harsh, BUT, if Rooney had never raised his hands to Ronaldo, the Ref would have had a desision to make.

I thought we played OK yesterday, and I personally think if we would have had 11 men on the field for the full 90 mins we would have one, but once again a moment of madness from one of players has cost us dear.

Tactics
Sven got the tactics all wrong IMO. He should have played 4-4-2, a system he has used since he took over and, despite what people may say, has worked well in the time he has been in charge. After all, in competive matches England have only lost 3 games under Sven, one of which was Brazil, and the other France. The players he picked in the squad, coupled with an unfortunate injury to Owen, restriced this option and he didnt really have a plan B. He was too scared to drop the "big name" players who wern't performing, so made players play out of position, and taking away a lot of our strenghts.

Sven may not be everyones favourite manager in England history, but if you look at his record then he aint done half bad. Personaly im glad he's resigned, I only hope McClaren isn't another FA "yes" man and shakes things up a bit.

The Players
From game one the players didnt really do themselves justice. Indivdually England have 11 of the best players in the world, the fact of the matter is most of them just didn't perform. Lampard, Owen, Beckham to name just a few were poor, and played nothing like they they are capable off. Wether this was down to the heat, playing out of position, too many games only they can answer that question.

The positive thing to come of the campain was players such as Joe Cole, Lennon, Hargreves, Crouch, Downing all getting a chance to come on and show that they can step up to the world stage and mix it with the best of them.

The Future
For me the future of English football is bright. The neuclius of the team is still strong, and will still be playing in Euro 2008, and possibly the World Cup in 2010. This mixed with good young players coming through the ranks leaves me feeling very optamistic. My only hope is that McClaren gives these players a chance, and isn't afraid to drop the "big name" players if they are playing poorly, and give the Youngsters a chance to show everybody what they can do. Im still not 100% convinced he is the right man to do this, only time will tell i suppose, but everybody needs to get behind him, let him get on with it, and see what happens.

well said. but englands demise was when darren bent wasn't selected. If Sven was ever in doubt of his striking force and needed a "Plan B" 4-5-1 formation, then select players that have played 4-5-1 all season....Darren Bent played alone upfront and was the top english scorer....now where's the logic in not selecting Bent and choosing a kid who has played less mins upfront than David James in the premiership, and slecting him on the basis of seeing him score a few goals for southampton in a few vids he'd seen.

The day I watched Sven name his team I said to my mate, "Your not getting past the last 16" although they got to the last 8, I was half wrong there.

englands tournament was over when sven chose to take a kid who hasn't even played a premiership game in his life over well proven scorers like bent & defoe. His stupidity cost england and they won't be as good next w/c unless players like lampard decide to carry on international duty at 32

I think the problems started with the team, he took 4 strikers, 2 of which were not match fit, he took Crouch who after all his praise for yesterday, I still think is not good enough for international level, and a kid who'd never played high level football, yet these 4 were picked over Bent, Defoe, Johnson, Rooney is an exception because I think he and the England staff knew he'd be fit eventually. They relied too much on Lampard and Gerrard scoring goals when in an England shirt they don't do what they do for their clubs, they didn't use the tactics the players are used to and the captain was only there for his setpieces, he offers nothing in open play to win a world crown.

Agree'd on beckham. His contribution isn't enough to secure a starting 11 place. As for gerrard, he's played in a position he used to accel at, but now has changed his game and doesn't fit into the postition sven wants him to. Another bad judgement from sven which I think cost them dearly

Darren Bent... remind me how many goals he has scored past the top top teams int he Premier League... 0

Defoe over him any day, Sven made the decision to take Walcott but didn't stand by the courage of his convictions...

One point to note... how well would we have done against France/Brazil without Beckham, Rooney, Owen, Terry

But according to most people isn't the premier league the best league in the world? (a statement which i now agree with). Therefore wouldn't being the top english scorer in the best league in the world merit a place in the england world cup squad?

IMO the first run Lennon went on justified every reason why Beckham should have been taken off...he created an excellent goalscoring chance...
