1-2 both 2.0, the 1.8 is the 1800GSR. As with all Evos, each newer model has a better engine really. The evo 4 onwards is the one to go for, although the 5 was where the real good engines came in (4's engine has weaker internals etc)

3 is obviously better than 1 and 2 and develops 270bhp and 228 ft/lb. The 1 develops 250bhp and 228 ft/lb and the 2 develops 260hp and same torque. 4 onwards was 280bhp and 274 torque.

just remember it takes 305lb/ft torque to climb a 20 degree incline with 3 15 stone moosepigs in a EVO.

i quite like the 4's as long as they are de-tango'd

5 and 6 were the best shapes though.

Quicker? I'd tell them their speaking from their non-evo-knowhow arse. The 4 is ok, just weaker internals etc still very reliable and fine unless your talking of tuning it in which case once your getting into the 400s your go for forged internals anyway

VI TME RS or Monte Carlo is where it's at though

Pic of my old TME..

That would have set you back 10-12k a few years ago...my mates had 2 evo 4's & he loves it!! Rolled the 1st one into a roundabout showing off so got another exactly the same!!
