I like reason, but find it a bit annoying that they haven't offered vst support (which i think is a big no no), but does offer rewire so you can use it within a multitracker like cubase/protools.
Personally it all depends what type of style you want to do, if you're thinking about live recording then i would stay away from reason/fruityloops etc and look at nuendo/cubase or protools. Otherwise if you're more sampler based, then fruityloops and reason would be right up your street with there sample trigger type interface.
But like i said, majority of software now supports rewire - so you could use cubase/nuendo as your rewire host, rewire FL into the host for the drum sections and triggering other samples and Reason for some of its synths/effects etc
Other pieces of software i would look at would be Ableton Live (tiesto uses it for knocking up simple sections) and Logic if you have a mac (industry standard on the mac apart from protools).

To be honest i use reason rewired to cubase a lot of the time, or did when i was big into it all.
I find that things like Fruit loops and recycle and many of the other tools which are that sort of thing are very limiting, to the extent that you can almost tell the software used when listening to a track.
Whereas although Reason is of a similar ilk i was amased that once you sus out how it works it feels almost limitless in its versatility.
But yeah its more a tool in the arsenal than the be all and end all.
Ive heard good things about Albeton.
Ive never got into the pro tools thing, at first i only heard about it in the context of recording rather than digital production until i read about a dj using it to sequence parts of a mix cd. Certainly sounds like a good bit of kit.
