Normally I do this:
I shut down pc, turn off modem and router, then power on modem. router, then pc. And see if it works
If not, try disabling the network cable in control panel or network connections, then enable again.
If not, try another cable

I tried the restarting thing twice, the light came on for a few seconds then went off.
Maybe its a faulty cable?

Take the PC and throw it out the window, fast, seriously that's the only way to fix this problem.

my mum n dads computer has had this problem before. I thought it could be the modem and/or cable and/or drivers. So brought a spare one round I had (identical) and updated the drivers.....still got the problem.
They are on AOL so just put it down to their shit service as after a week of continual disruptions it stopped. Will occasionally do it from time to time but comes back online after a few mins.

if you have another way to access the net, get onto your sp website as they usual have a part for error reporting and it will say if thers a problem with service.

just try another network cable, there cheap enough if they die
i have about a hundred in a box upstairs ranging from 1/2m to 5m in length
also, try a different port on the router & restart that too
