Hia,

In the process of slowing ripping off bits from the 20XE to remove the head. I've been told I need to set the timing to top dead centre before I whip the head off.

Now I've done some searches (on mig mostly) and they say about lining up the crank pully mark with the mark on the casing. I've also looked into Haynes which mentions there are notches on cogs which match up with the casing

To make things more confusing I've read alot on MIG That the pullies are known to slip abit making the notches absolutely useless...

Thoughts/ideas/suggestions, I've never done this before so I'm really looking forward to it

think the slipping pullies will only happen when you running verniers if you have got standard pullies then i would worry about it as they are notched on.

All you need to do is get a socket on the bottom pulley bolt (e20) or on the cam pulley bolts (15mm) and thurn the engine over until the notches on the cams line up with the notches on the cam cover behind it if you are running a standard setup then its should be pretty obvious to see all the nothces.

Then after you have done that just check that the bottom crank pulley is lined up at the bottom aswell, this one is alittle harder to see but there is a pin like thing sticking out from the engine that shouold lijne up with a small notch on the pulley.

Yep the rod/screwdriver/whippet method was mentioned quite a few times and that sounds good - Just need to take the other spark plugs out to ensure I'm not gimping my arms against pressure.

dont get confused with the difference between TDC and the marks on the cams.

vauxhall timing marks are about 15 degrees out from true TDC

What this man said. I didn't bother when I took my engine apart though. Don't know if that's a bad thing though.

i always find the point where all the pistons are halfway through their stroke when removing a cylinder head.

when you put the head back on theres less chance of the valve being open and resting on the piston as its hard to get the cams to TDC when refitting the head.
