I know it's illegal to have any tints on your front side windows, but if you have light tints on the front and it passes an MOT would that mean that the police couldn't get you to remove them?
I'm trying to think of a better way to ask this question.
I know that dark front side tints would fail an MOT, but light tints get through, so I was wondering if it's okay if it passes the MOT.
If that makes sense, thanks

Light front tints arent illegal, they just cant be very dark. Also, tinted glass is not tested as part of the MOT, so that has no issue at all (and isnt a point to argue if you get pulled).
Tinted windows laws currently say that the front windscreen has to let 75% of light through and the front side windows 70%.

front windows often have a tint on them anyway. most of the time that means ANY tint makes it illegal

So someone with totally black (limo) front sides would get through an MOT?
I was just wondering if tints were looked for an MOT.
So if your front sides were tinted but let enough light through it's okay?
Although Rob just said technically any tint is illegal?

basically, you have to allow 70% of light through.
lots of manufacturers tint their windows (generally to around 25-30%), so any additional tint would make them illegal.
Limo Tints won't pass...

Okay, thanks. I was just unsure.
Basically, front sides illegal
Rear anything
What about whether if you had your windows tinted before the law changed, then they're are legal, or was that just made up/not true?

I can't believe how many people I see with totally black front sides (well I don't see them as you can't see in the car).
Thanks for your help

So basically, what that says is front tints are illegal, but light tints are viewed as not actually being that bad and you could get away with them?
I think I'll just think of it as front tints are illegal
