had my car in at the garage yesterday for a new water pump, timing belt and full fitting kit(pulleys etc). everything was fitted fine but their is now a wierd type of rattle noise mostly when at low revs and then again at high revs, which the garage think is comming from the altinator belt tensioner which was nackered anyway, replaced that but the noise is still their
garage said leave it a while as it may need running in, but told me to go back if it carry's on.

anyone know what could be the problem? ill get a video of the sound later on.

cheers

Bit of a stupid statement. In my experience, if something is making a noise it shouldn't, it's fucked.

all the parts are brand new though, only started making this noise since all the new parts were fitted, the engine sounds miles better and runs better except for this type of metal rattling noise.

did they set the timing right, if slightly out this could be why its tapping.

Alternatively maybe they used thinner oil, whereas before the thicker oil covered up the wear during the summer months?

take it back to the garage, theres something not right there. the advice:

"leave it a while as it may need running in"

is one of the most stupid statements ever. any mechanic that thinks a timing belt needs running in is a complete waste of time. ask them to get the covers off and listen for the noise properly using a piece of tubing to locate the noise.

my advice: dont drive it or rev it. but get it back to the garage asap. tell them the problem has been there since they did the timing belt and wasnt there before and you want them to investigate it straight away as they havnt done the job properly that they have charged you for.

its not the timing belt he said that about, he said it about the new altinator belt tensioner thing, he said, leave it a while if it doesnt go away then come back.

well its unlikely to be a tensioner, these run on bearing rings which are super smooth

i had the same noise on my and me m8's corsa it was the bolt that holds the tensioner on the new kit has a tapered headed bolt we used the old bolt with a hex head and the bottom pully caught the bolt head when reved all we did was take off the bottom pulley and ran a flap wheel over the back edge of the pulley to make it smooth when put back no more rubbing hth

i rekon the crank pulley bush has worn and is causing it to knock against the timing belt tensioner bolt
