I'm thinking of buying a Sony 50" rear projection TV.
Can anyone provide any advice? I heard a while ago that rear projection TV's can distort or give a bad picture. But apparently are better these days? The TV is a HD model, will this improve the picture quality?
Has anyone got one of these?

My mate has a 60" Rear Projection Sony and the picture is fine. Obviously isn't going to be as good as an LCD/HD etc but still a good screen.

From what i remember at Curry's with Rear projections you generally need to be in front of the screen, and at certain distances for the best picture quality. e.g. Too close and the picture is pretty poor, or if you're at say 45 degree's to the screen the picture quality is pretty pants too.
Saying that, it was 2 years ago or so, and they weren't HD so the new units might have rectified that problem.
Completely contradicting myself here
Just seen this at the bottom ... http://www.corsasport.co.uk/board/viewthread.php?tid=295523 ... good old related links bit

We've got an 82" Plasma at work, but it's up pretty high so doesn't look so big, apparently it weighs more than 70kg or something, so it's a bit of a beast, amazing picture quality though, as you'd expect.
Some drunken fools chucked bottles at it after the England v Portugal loss, broke the glass protecting the screen, so it's just been repaired and good as new

It all depends on how far away you will be viewing it from.
