A newer format of surround sound than standard Dolby Digital or DTS (a rival to Dolby Digital EX) theres supporters of each but it is worth having.

The ES means Extended Surround. You can add a rear speaker for complete cinema experience making the system a 6.1 true surround

I would go for the Cambridge Audio AZUR 540R MK1 - i know its Richersounds "own" brand, but It sounds brilliant for the money and What Hi-Fi/Cinema gave it a bloody good rating for the pennies.
Speaker wise, missions/Wharfedale's, all cheap stuff and sound alright
