I've got no idea what to do, I've closed down the things I'm not using, all I have open is one IE window.
I've restarted the laptop, but it's still really slow.
Any ideas?

right click on my computer>properties goto advanced tab and performance settings then advanced tab in there, virtual memory is at the bottom - click on change;
on intital zize and maximum size, put in double the figures which are currently there and click set.
reboot
should be ok

that depends on if hes running low on virtual memory because hes running out of hard drive space, if hes low on hard drive space then that wont help, check hdd space first, if thats fine then do the above
