what have you decided to go for Jamie?
As abdus said earlier I went for the Denon DHT500SD. It's an all-in-one system but don't let that put you off.
I needed something I could hook up straight away and get going. Money was at a premium as I'd just got the mortgage so £400 for the Denon wasn't too bad I thought.
What's great about it though is not only does it sound good, but it easily allows you to add on bits whenever you like. For example an AV receiver or an upgrade in speakers (I'm considering purchasing some Movie QX speakers closer to christmas - funds permitting).
I'm not much of an audiophile to be honest but I'm not one to go down to the local Argos and get the first surround sound kit i see for £100. The quality is immense and sounds much better than the cheaper alternatives. Bass is good and the sound given from the satellite speakers is great. Can't really fault it.
As with most things electrical, you get what you pay for and if you're going to be watching plenty of DVDs and listening to music then it will be well worth splashing out a bit

I was trying to buy the one Cybermonkey had. He sold it to me with his 'George Lucas wipes his ass over this for authenticity' remark

sorry, didn't see the link.
Very good speakers though I had a 4.1 Logitech speaker setup for the PC and it served me well. I remember the subwoofer being huge
I like the black design as well.
