Am I correct in saying the alternator light is the one which looks like a battery?

Anyway, when I turn the ignition off on my 1.0 12v W-reg, every light goes out instantly except for the alternator light which gives bit of a flash and then fades, is this right? Also I hear a whirring from the engine as I switch off the ignition, which I presume if the alternator.

Doesn't really bother me, just want to know if it's right and safe...

Many thanks in advanced

Is this dangerous then? What will happen if I don't get a new one?

Ok - when I have my lights on and switch the heated rear screen on my lights fade ever so slightly when idling, is this because of the alternator (the change in light is extremely minimal and can only see it when facing something close the the garage door etc)? The battery is about 62,500 miles old.

if the light stayin on when ignition off a new one is needed.diode pack inside has failed. sounds like u need to run an earth lead off the alternater bracket to a good earthin point too

It doesn't stay on continuously, just like 2secs after the ignition is turned off. Is this still the problem?

Naaa. My mechanic is normally pretty good with things like that though. I also need the engine coolant checking so may pop in and see him.

If I used a mutlimeter, is it the case of being 12v when not running and 14v when running? (I read another thread )

Cool cheers - thanks for your help. At least I know the car isn't going to blow up on me in the near future.
