when you take a picture do you check the histogram for the light distribution. the far left is the shadows, the center is the mid tones and the far right is the highlights. Digital cameras don't have the dynamic range of film and getting gooes noise free images with a nice spread of tones is not as easy compared to film. To combat this we should expose to the right but not so far as to blow out the highlights (your LCD should flash when you check the histogram to show you blown out highlights) and then pull back the levels in RAW. this produces a smoother sharper noise free image.

two pictures, one exposed to the right of the histogram and the exposure pulled back in raw and the other normally exposed. both have been sharpened smart sharpen 100 1.0. its not a perfect test but you'll get the idea.

I'm lost.

I don't understand any of that. What does 'pull back the levels or RAW' mean

He's assumed people are using DSLR cameras, RAW files are what they can produce and are very large files which contain a lot more information in them than a Jpeg will. Using Raw means you can adjust the photo a lot more through brightness levels etc.

I think thats it anyway
