Quite an interesting read

For anyone who hasn't read it, its talking about how CNW (an American research company) have carried out a two year study on a cars carbon footprint. This "dust to dust" cost, looks at what amounts of energy are used to manufacture, run & maintain a car, rather than just on emissions alone.

The Jeep Wrangler came out on top for cars that can be purchased in the UK. It also talks about how Hybrid cars (such as the Toyota Prius), use a lot more enrgy in production when compared to a "normal" car.

Even the 27 litre Rover SD1 is better for the environment As is my 2.0 Corsa, as is a Escort Cosworth etc etc. The point it highlights is that every new car made means that more energy is being used. Using a car thats already built saves energy.

Maybe road tax should be structured this way instead? More rewards for not buying a new car, less smugness from douchey Prius owners

Its worth buying, as ever. Definately one of the better car magazines around today

Here's a link to CNW's site for more info - http://www.cnwmr.com/

Thoughts?

So basically, the jist of it is that recycling is better.

Makes sense I suppose.

Yes

But also that these "environmentally friendly" cars, aren't as eco friendly as people think.

One of the whole things about new cleaner cars/buildings/whatever is that the main benefits you will see are over a long timescale, these new cars may use more energy in production but may save more in the long run if somebody stopped using an old car and used this instead. But it would only really make a difference say 5 years on at the least

Hence the reason the Prius doesn't have any green awards and the 5.0 Merc S class does.

Its not just that - the production for the batteries of these hybrids is extreemly harmful to the environment.

I think it was in the daily mail, they had an article about some factory in canada that toyota buy the raw materials to make a battery for the prius from - basically it spews out sulphur dioxide all day long and has killed every living thing in about a 20 mile radius.....

When designing anything you have to worry about the carbon cycle too It's too theoretical really to be relied upon though.

Not with our government. Havent read the whole article so can only have an educated guess, but if your talking about energy consumption and environmental effects, modern cars are produced under much stricter regulations than in days of old. Same goes for the emmisions the cars give out.

No chance of them dropping tax prices on older cars - simply down to a case of greed. They won't actively encourage people to drive older cars when they can make more money off VAT, and (usually) higher road tax on new cars!

Bought this today. The write up for the Diesel Westfield is funny, when they were considering engines, they decided against a 13b rotary, because the car would have got called the WankField

Great Mag, best it's been for a while.

Well worth the £4 to anyone who's not sure.
