Probably one of the easiest jobs to do Ally.
At my parents house it is just the floor of the loft done and then my Dad has put boards down over them. There house is alway boiling too so does the trick

I just slung the old internal doors up there when I replaced them & laid them over the rafters, use them to stack the suitcases & junk on

how wide and deep they are.
also the distance they span and spacing between them is an important factor.

I'll see if I can get measurements when I get home. I won't be doing masses of walking around up there Just need a bit more space to put stuff.

colin is talking about gang nail trusses have 4 or 6 vertical sloping supports on each truss
not easy to explain with words

Difficult to say Dave.
All roofs are designed differently, without having a real good look around your roof I wouldn't want to comment. However (like Colin said) if its a trussed roof with gang nail plates, its unlikely 'much' allowance has been made for live load storage.
Also, it's not always a good idea to throw acres of mineral wool into a roofspace without considering other factors such as ventilating the roof void. In Allys case, it's highly probable that the roof a 'warm' roof....ie the insulation is between the roof rafters not the ceiling ties.
Best not to mess around with these things without seeking some professional advice

it gets worse...
my dad came up saturday and went up into the loft - i have about 2 inches of insulation on the floor half which is no where near enough

I went to Focus the other week and bough some rolls of insulation (8" stuff) and some kits of chip board flooring. To redo the whole of my loft its only cost me about £60-£70. Cheap for what is a lot of useful space once the floorings down.
Just remember to wear a mask if you ever remove any old stuff. I was coughing up bits of fibreglass for a week after not doing so when I did the first half of it! Not good!

always wear a dust mask with fiberglass insulation, nasty stuff. for fixing tonge and grove chipboad flooring down use some 2" no10 woodscrews but be carefull for any cables or pipes.
