secondly, is there a way i can damage a CD (making all data corrupt/unreadable) without making any obvious marks to a CD?

could be a problem with the laser in the drive. is there much data on the disc ?

Is it a CD-R?
Back in the day, you could "delete" files from a CD-R using Nero which just created a new session that hid the original files. This also used to work with the Windows XP CD copying feature, but I've not tried it for a while.

But if you're trying to access the CD rather than break it, most of the good data recovery software will work on CDs too. Isobuster might even be able to read all sessions, even hidden ones.
