Is there anyway that the MOT tester could find out what year the engine was anyway?

Just tell them its an early 20XE so doesn't need a CAT

some cars DO pass emissions without a cat, but by the sounds of it you've answered your own question, you don't want to pay for a sports one but then you don't want the hassle of changing it so just get catback.

not got a clue what that is tbh, if i was you i'd get a sports cat, i know they're silly money for something you don't really want but a 1.4 cat is going to restrict your 2.0 so much, but a decat is just tedious.

Went to Exhausts UK for my back box! Can't fault em really except that they only make loud exhausts! Loads of mates have been before and had no problems. Takes about 2/3 hours for them to make and fit your exhaust!!

Just so you know, If you're pulled over at the roadside, without a cat, you WILL be fined if they spot it.

Even if it passes an MoT, it's illegal to drive a car with an engine which requires a cat, without one.

I dont have a CAT on mine and it passed the MOT (registered as a 2.0). I fopund this while trying to work out whether it needed one http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/repository/7.3%20Emmissions%20-%20Spark%20Ignition%20-%20Passenger%20Cars%201992-2002.pdf
. There may be some other stuff on VOSA website.

I wouldnt bother with the decat, it wont give you any decent gains, makes the exhaust note sound tinny & is a pain come MOT time!!
