I owned a new style Astra 1.6i 16v for 20 months. It was a very reliable and enjoyable to drive, especially when compared to the previous model. The handling is super, confidently taking on bends and not suffering too much over bumps. I did find on some open roads with cross winds, it did seem to waver.
The engine is a delight. It gave power in easy reach and was very willing. Gearchange was good, and the brakes effective. Boot space for a hatch was fine and a shape that was usable.
There is plenty of room inside although the interior is a bit dull especially the dashboard. There is good driver seat adjustment on the LS model, and the steering wheel adjusted as well.
The only niggly problem was with the automatic choke. It failed to settle properly when started from cold and led to a awful drive for the first mile. This needed seeing to by the dealer.
Fuel consumption was regularly around 40mpg.
I recommend this car for most family use, there are bigger engine versions for more sporty drivers.
