basically my mate is looking into getting his car chipped, remapped.

we both dont know anything about it really but heard alot of different terms used.

are these all different things

live map
re-map
superchip
uni chip
dastek software
software upgrade

anything else, li,ke i sadi dont know if these are the same as each other, if not what are the differences

live map:

refers to the waay the remap is done. basicly its a map which is written in real time to suit the actual car itself. a one off map if you like. this term is used for remaps of the standard ecu as well as a map on a custom aftermarket ecu such as Omex etc...

Re-map:

can be anything really, basicly its a term used to describe the process of writing a new map into the cars ecu. not specific to any type of mapping

superchip:

basicly either a new chip that is put into the cars ecu which holds a new map or sometimes its a 'flash remap' which is a way of describing a method in which the cars ecu isnt even opened, its just connected to a computer and the superchip map is written into the ecu to replace the manufacturers standard map

unichip:

Unichip is made by a company called Dastek. its basicly a piggyback ecu that intercepts the signals coming in and out of the ecu (from the engines sensors) and changes the values of these signals to suit the mappers requirements. the map is written specifically for that engine and is a very accurat and safe way of remapping as the cars ecu stays completely untouched and is easily put back to standard if needed.

can these be done to any engine, i.e. my 1.4 sri (c14se)

no they are not, remapping is advised on all modded engines, and some standard to get the best of your mods, or just change the engine to your preferences

only on engines where cam timing and fueling/air is altered, on a standard n/a engine a remap will give you nothing to speak of, like whitter said a remap works best on turbo engines for simple bang for buck

live map hence they are more expensive as its custom to your engine thus get sthe best of the engine

Would not bother on a N/A unless its high performance

personally I would get a Dastek unichip. heres some reasons why:

1. completely removable
2. no changes made to the cars standard ecu
3. easy and cheap to remap if needed
4. lots of dastek dealers out there that will remap it
5. Lots of nice options such as nitrous control, launch control, shift lights etc...
6. Very reliable and well know brand

look at it this way, if you get a live map done at 1 place, that place goes bust and you need a remap. unless you can get hold of the software they used to map it (unlikely) then you are bit stuck and will need to shell out for a whole new remap as opposed to just going to another Dastek dealer and paying a much smaller amount for the map to be altered.

There is a lot of companies offering live maps these days, a lot of them are just a generic map that they flash into the ecu. personally I would steer clear of these places and their claimed power figures are laughable.

also, on a standard N/A engine a remap is a bit of a waste. unless you have made changes that require the ignition or fuelling to be altered then theres no point in remapping it.

p.s, fitting a 'performance' exhaust or air filter etc... does not mean you need a remap.

when you consider the features and work that goes into a fitting a dastek unichip they are very well priced (£500 on most cars)

ive heard from many people , even rema[pping a standard car with no mods gives good improvements through the gears

on a n/a engine you will usually get nothing, maybe a bhp or two if your lucky.

a cars fueling and timing will already be advanced pretty much as far as it can go as thats give the best efficiency

with a turbo you have boost to play with hence the big gains

hence 45 BHP and up to 90lbs/ft of torque etc for my engine

£550 for a unichip from Dastek for my car and he would hope to see 35-40bhp extra.
