Hi,
I'm still running in my engine but about 200 miles ago it developed a slight tapping noise. I assumed it was a noisey lifter and i was going to change them all when i put new cams in next month. On the way home it got worse and my car died. There was smoke pouring out of my oil breather. It starts up and runs fine but every now and then this horrible knocking noise comes and goes. The RAC man said it sounded top endy and the towing guy reckons it's my cams. Any ideas as this is really worrying as it just been rebuilt.

Sorry to sound dumb but how would i check that. It had a brand new oil pump fitted 800 miles ago while it was being rebuilt. The oil pressure light goes out.

Just took rocka cover off. Plenty of oil sitting around the lifters. On the cams it appears not to be shiney silver all the way round. On the tips of the lobes it is and around the base is but the build up and coming down from the tip of the lobe is like a brown? If that makes sense. Also seems to be alot of a white goo in the breather pipe which goes round the back of the engine.

Well yes. I believe that's a sign of a head gasket but why would one go after only 800 miles of driving? Also why would this cause a violent tapping noise from the top end?

Hydraulic lifters could be sticking. Did you drain them of oil before you rebuilt the head?

same is happening with my engine after mine was rebuilt, took it to a different garage and straight away he said it was the hydraulic lifters

Don't know if the oil was drained. Gary from Migweb done the head so everything was done properly but the cams look pretty worn so maybe the lifters are aswell. I've ordered some new cams and lifters so i'll fit them and then do a compresion test just to make sure.
