we've got one....but it's in the cupboard 
one started beeping and putting in a new battery didn't make it stop, so we got another one and I can't really remember what happened with it!
Will probably put one up when we decorate the hall though
fire scares me

Haha i hate them but obv they are very usefull. we have one in kitchen/dining room/ front room and one on the landing... and when one of the buggers go off the whole lot go off ..quite funny trying to turn them all off.

We had a small tiny fire last night, just black smoke...
... but we slept through it which has frightened me abit so considering just getting 2, one for each hallway bottom and top

We have smoke alarms wired in to the mains. Because our house is shared ownership, they come and check they are OK every few months.

These piss me off, I am a plumber and to solder the pipes together obviously requires a blowtorch and a heat mat which creates alot of smoke, the bloody things are beeping all day
Nothin we put over them seems to stop them either they are so sensitive and there the typr that dont come away from the ceiling :@

I hard wired one when I was doing up my flat. Only problem is I stuck it in the hall outside the kitchen so whenever Im cooking up a storm the bloody thing keeps going off & because its hard wired I cant turn it off

If your fitting one stick it upstairs if a fire broke out downstairs the smoke would go upstairs within seconds anyway & still alert you!!!

 did the fire go out itself?
We have 3 smoke alarms in the house 1 in the kitchen and 1 in the hall then 1 up in the landing all wired into the mains  .
Better been safe than sorry i hate fire was stuck in a burning house when i was young ever since i have never been a fan of putting the fire on in the house ect go around the house at night checking everything is off

You should always have one on each floor. We have a combined carbon monoxide and smoke detector, was warming the car up on the drive other day (right outside front door, door was ajar) and after about 10 mins the monoxide alarm satrted goin off! least i know it works...

Got two - one in the basement and one on the top floor landing (3 storey house )
I think you can get them free (including fitting) by simply asking your local fire station about them.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, mine are battery powered (9v) but they also take a feed from the 240v supply as a backup incase the battery runs out for any reason - although it does beep when the batterys need replacing - they really are worth getting.
