Last year we (Vodafone) lined up behind Phones 4U and unceremoniously dumped Carphone Warehouse... this week O2 have done the same but the opposite way round... could be the beginning of the end!!!! Have to wait and see what Orange and T-Mobile do!

I only deal directly with the phone companies, never go in to Phones 4U etc.

I have yet to see the stores offer a better deal than from the companies direct. Phones4U were shit as they used Singlepoint. Carphone Warehouse didn't or not sure if they still do seem to think texts came with a monthly contract. They want to charge you an arm and a leg for extras. The link, well the staff are mainly muppets from the stores I've visited and don't seem to know their own stock never mind what is coming soon or due in.
I just deal with the retentions department and basically negotiate my new phone and contract each year.

Indeed mate... depending on what 3, T-Mobile and Orange decide to do I suspect we'll see Carphone and Phones 4U selling their mobile busiensses ina few years as there will be no point staying open if they only sell 1 or 2 networks phones!!
Allan mate... as said, The Link was bought by O2 and Singlepoint was re-purchased by Vodafone last year

Can this be done if you are a new customer?

As Robbo said, no. Retentions is for existing customers to Retain their business. It is always worth asking your existing provider for a new deal before moving on. Often they will offer better deals than can be found instore, online etc. Always worth a go
