I have found my old laptop and wanted to start it up to clear all the gubbins on it so i can give it to my mum for when she goes back home.
problem is, it has a password on it and for the life of me i cannot remember what it was, have tried all my usual ones but no luck (was about 3 year since i used it)
Its running Windows XP
Is there any way of removing the password, i can plug the hard drive into my caddy on this laptop and delete the files but still wont allow me access when it goes back into the other laptop.
help please

Start the computer up in safe mode.
Restart it>press F8
It will come up with loads of writing, and it will get to the login screen, there will be an account called "administrator" click that, and go to control panel>user account>set up a new 1. Then delete the old 1, but it will give you the option to keep files.
That should work.

when i start in safe mode im getting this
even when im asked to put in a password for the Admin username still not working, have racked my brain trying to think of it.

If you dont need anything on it then just put the XP disk and and format the disk and install windows nice and fresh on it

i dont have the xp disk anymore, only have a copy of 98.

this may sound stupid but have you tried clicking it with no password entered? get this quite abit in work and works fairly often 
is there nobody you can get a disc from? all you'll need is your key which should be on a sticker on the laptop somewhere, who's disc it is shouldn't matter.

If you have a reg key for it then you only need the correct ISO CD image and you will be able to reinstall. Probably better that you do anyway, clean install usually be quicker, ensure no viruses are present etc.

You can get tools to sort that install.
Personally I wouldn't go to those lengths to save a standard OS install that you're going to give away anyway. Just get your stuff off while the drive is in another computer then do a fresh install on that hardware for the new owner.
