Reet, need another runaround for about 2-2.5k, looking at Mk3 Golf GTi`s.

Anyone owned one? anything i need to look out for? differences in specs/models etc?

I disagree. My Dad had one for 3 years, fair enough the figures don't look to promising but the car has a lot of low down grunt, more so than other comparable 8v engines. 100% reliable in the time he owned it too. The 16v has 150bhp but received bad reviews as you needed to work it to get the power, hence why people prefered the less powerful, but more useable 8v.

typical Corsasport answer, i dont care if its 'slow' its going to be taking me to work occasionaly and to the tescos lol. I just really like golfs and would prefer one to a corsa, fiesta, saxo etc etc as runaround.

my gfriend has a mk4 GT TDi and we use that for long trips etc.

yeah good point marc, i do remember that about the 16v ones, so would be looking at a 8v, i guess its cheaper to insure as well.

if its for occasional use and not for the performance, why spend the extra money on fuel and insurance for the gti?

dave dont like the look of the lesser models to be honest. GTi has the electrics, comfy seats, looks a lot better etc.

gti 8v 115bhp
gti 16v 150bhp
vr6 174bhp
were about group 16-17 before it changed

gti's came with arch trims and half color coded bumpers
vr6 came with them too but later spec ones with smoothed bumpers and sometimes no sideskirts.

common places for rust, around tailgate lock, arches, under rubber doorseals on sidesill, edge of roof at windscreen

mates dad had a green 16v gti with full cream leather, he used it as a general car and loved it, it looked nice( was about 5 years ago now though), was very comfy, solid and although it didnt feel very fast it had enough poke for overtaking and making decent progress.

i would rather have the mk3 seat ibiza cupra though, has the same engine as the golf gti but its cheaper and quicker

i take it you mean the mk2 cupra, i used to have an 01 ibiza cupra 1.8 T so wouldnt like to go backwards to an N/A mk2 version.

I just bought a Dragon Green mk3 GTi, and i cant praise it enough.

Yep its an 8v and yes it has 115/120bhp, and yes its heavy but its not totally gutless.

Around town its a dream low down torque i can go round roundabouts in 4th with no probelms.

It pulls nice and clean and reaches the magic ton with ease.

It does 34-37 mpg on a run, and three other of my mates have them - they just never go wrong!

Like i say its never going to rip the tarmac off the floor but its comfy, it handles well and its over German engineering.

I love it to pieces personally!
