Helpful reply there John...

You can Wine most windows apps with little trouble, others can be a bit bitchy... Games are a cunt to get working. Cedega allows for 'basic' DX compatibility and such on a few games, but its still in development.

But given linux's Open Source community, there are many alternatives to windows apps, but the bonus is there free

I'm running Gentoo on all my rigs (its more an advanced distro than the likes of Ubunto/Debian) but it does everything my Windows setup did, plus more! Also I've had absolutely no crash situation, loss of data, etc, which I used to have on Windows.

If you ARE serious about Linux, I'd recommend you try Ubuntu to get started with. It pretty much runs out-of-the-box and is very flexible. Only gripe Linux can have is with Wireless Networks (encrypted) as its a bit hit&miss at present, but can be done!

BUT I warn you...

IF you are not good at computers at present, don't bother... Its a pretty involved OS, and NOT for the faint hearted!

Bonus though - spyware/adware/virus's are pretty much none-existant on nix, and its also a HELL of alot more secure than Windows, and this includes Vista...

Also, have a look at Gnome 2.18 with AIGLX+Beryl

You can use Latex too which is a pretty good piece of software if you learn how to use it...

It's annoying that my CAD package I use doesn't come in a Linux version though...

I wouldn't say linux was as easy to live with as windows. You'll most definately have somekind of problem whilst setting your system back up imo.

Try running linux and windows on a dual boot first. That way you can still have a play with linux and see if its right for you.

Once you have made your descison you can then wipe it and install whatever you preference is

Knoppix, Ubunto and Debian are all good starter distributions

Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux. As Linux is GNU there are loads of slightly different versions out and about. Ubuntu is good. I dual boot my system into it and use it for various things.

Yup that sums it up quite well. If all you do is browse the internet, check a few mails and use office then something lie Ubuntu will probably work perfectly out the box but if you want to do anything a bit special chances are you will get into the realms of command line work.

One of the good things about linux is the amount of HOWTOs out there.

If you want to have a play around - you could try using VMWare player and running it in that to see what its like
