just went out and got a brand new gold live but when i put it in on the xbox it said i was already on sliver and then messages came up and freinds!! was there any need for me to go out and get gold?

yes as without gold you wouldnt have been able to play online.
everyone gets silver.

Nah silver is online too it lets you dwnload movie trailers, game demos, tlk to friends etc
but gold allows you to play games online.
