What to do what to do, years back I liked having a seperate machine for all my files for the network... thats still the case at the moment.

I have a FreeBSD 6.x box running Samba/apache/whatever to serve stuff on the network, a few disks and bam it works.

But the machine kicks out alot of heat&noise and I dunno if I should just chuck a few massive disks into my windows box and just be content with that or go for some funky brickness that can serve all my stuff.

What are you guys doing?

I presume you mean at home then.

I just have two 500Gb drives in my server which are clones or each other for backup. the main drive out of the two stores all my music, films, tv episodes, photos and documents which are all played on my media centre/tv at the other side of the flat

Works well

What CPU is it? Noise is fairly easy to get rid of by replacing the fans with quieter units

umming about it for a while but I think a LaCie NAS device will be my weapon of choice, spent the morning deciding over the size (500gb or 1TB) and I think I'll go for 500GB, reasons for this are:

* Currently my file server has 4x120gb (480gb), which isnt full and stuff needs removing.

* I'm unsure if the 1TB product is two disks or not, current reviews of the 500GB product show that its very quiet which is what I'm after, I'd be really miffed if I got the 1TB and it was loud as fook.

*If the device was to fail, I'd rather loose 500gb of data instead of 1TB.

LACIE looks nice, and im considering it myself.
I currently use a netgear SC101 and while the idea/concept of it is really good, the software is soooo shite, buggy and glitchy, i would never recommend it (also not compatable with Vista) and you have run software on each machine just to access it.

Does the Lacie have its own interface and fixed IP?

The one I've ordered comes with 10/100 Ethernet and a USB connection.

Has a full IP Suite that can be configured as far as I'm concerned, I'll report back my findings if you're interested.

Got the Lacie box in the mail yesterday, does what it says on the tin basically.

Got it from Misco in the end cause they had it in stock and delivered 24 very long hours later, got it up and running with 5 minutes cause I had to bolt on the stand, but its pretty snazzy and very quiet.

Plugged it into the network and turned it on, DHCP gave it an address and then you just browse to it to access the admin interface, not much to it really. Setup a share, ftp, username with RW permissions and then started moving aload of data across, got about 7mb/s between the brick and my windows box which is alright for now.

Got the grueling job of slowly moving over all the data from my workstation which is nearly complete, then I have about 60GB of mp3s I need to shift from the fileserver so I can completely forget about that and make some more space under my desk

How long will 500gb last? unsure
