The guy blocked his run, some of those get given and some dont, the ref just gave this one in this case.
petrov won the ball and SG got his strop on, moaning at the ref cos big time gerrard shouldnt be allowed to be tackled by somebody nobody has heard of, the ref obviously a fan of gerrard or easily intimidated gave the free kick. hardly an ambassador for your sport when u moan when u get challenged

Im not sure how its any tarnish on Gerrard when all Petrov got on the ball was a toe (enough for both the ref and Gerrard not to see the touch without a replay which neither had), hence the appeal for a free kick and the ref giving it.
As I said, decisions like those sometimes get given and sometimes dont, he didnt dive on the floor trying to win the freekick, he just turned and appealed as he was blocked off...it was down to the ref to decide if Petrov got a toe on it or not.
