First off, what type of paint are you wanting to use? Celly, 2k etc?

http://www.diy-compressors.com/spraying-basics.htm

I sell paint/thinners to alot of bodyshops around here. I suggest finding a pro and learning from them. There is alot to learn

by the looks of it i'd be using a cellulose paint - does this means that it doesn't require hardener?

With Celli you mix it as thin as possible - at least 50% thinners to 50% paint. I've probably mixed to 70/30 at times.

You shouldn't need hardener, and unless its a metallic paint, you shouldn't need lacquer either - as you can end up with some shitty things happening.

cellulose paint is air drying even metallic cellulose is air drying,
most paint is referred to as either 1k (air drying) or 2k(needs hardener) then it is down to the specific paint in question as to mixing ratios 2k is usually 2:1:10% being hardener and thinners respectively.
hope this helps, but I'm sure if you search Google theres so many ppl asked this before

Id go for 2k personally you will get a nice finish and it lasts. obviously its harmfull to breath in but invest ina good mask and plently of ventalation and you should be fine.

I've never wanted to use 2k without a proper booth, don't think it's fair to your family or neighbours to be pumping cyanide into the atmosphere.

I sell more 2k than anything else, but for a DIY job mabe cellulose based is better?

start off 50/50 with 1k, then go to like 60/40 then to 70/30 will give a smooth finish if done proper.

and lots of cutting paste etc to finish with.
