My computer illiterate mate has bought an Astra GSi turbo (MK4 shape) and is looking to have a slight play with it.
It will be used for mainly road use and the odd day at Crail 1/4 mile.
He has talked about a VXR turbo upgrade but im slighty dubious.

VXR turbo is only about £600 IIRC. That and a map (so im led to beleive) is aroun d £270 as long as your exhaust fuelling and injectors etc are up to the job. Oh and a larger SMIC or FMIC is needed.
If nobody has warned him yet, dont even bother with a dumpvalve.
As mentioned regal are good or get yourself onto www.astraownersclub.com

Regal have just released a tubular manifold which is flanged for Garret GT series turbos, but they say it's only for use with forged pistons and steel rods
VXR turbo and injectors is a good start, with a remap and some metal boost pipes.

My mate has just bought an astra mk4 SRi turbo, Z20LET, same as the astra GSi and is about to buy a bailey dump valve, why does he need to be warned mate? Do they mess up the engines?

Depends how much he wants to spend. It's easy to get alot of power out of them.
As Jambo said, dump valves are not reccomended.

damn your quick quoting
And no not for free i edited that incase you thought i was serious.
It messes with the AFM, the ECU and fucking everything.
Makes it jerky, and some people say it looses you power.
Mines coming off sharpish.

It seems to be the case on most new turbo engines that dump valves are a no-go.
Seems that de-restricting the air box and the vectra c inlet pipe is a good start on th ZLET.
Then a VXR turbo, Injectors and a re-map would be good.
Think hes in the process of finding an exhaust for it too....

If you really want to hear the turbo all you need is an induction kit/panel filter. It's quiet standard but a filter makes it louder. And you don't need a dump valve.

Yeah i was just finding out why it is a bad idea for the sump valve really, seems it messes with the cars ecu and makes it run poorly.
Ill let him know about the filter and all of the upgrades in this thread!

De-Restricting the airbox with a panel filter is a good start.
Pre-Cat is also very restrictive so replacing that releases power.
From what i've read Miltek are good exhausts for the GSi.

For some reason z20LETS make insane torque with maps and clutches cannot cope and a consequence is poor standing quarters and traction particularly in the wet. My friends Phase 3.5 was insane in the wet to the point he had to get the switch to turn it off when ever it was damp.
If i was to go down the tuning the Z20let route i'd have:
2.2 airbox and pannel filter
Uprated FMIC
51mm silicone hoses
VXR turbo (although its not extemely different to stock just can be had cheaper for around 350-400 notes with all the fittings)
Precat pipe
sports cat
full stainless system
Prolly got for a generic map such as a CS2 as its the half way house to good power and manageable tractabilitly making it quicker than the big bhp cars.
