A friend of my parents have been quoted £45k for a double garage. Its being built into the side of a hill which will require additional work - still seems extremely expensive.

Who is gonna design this for you, have you spoken to an architect to get some basic plans drawn up? It will be easier to get a basic cost with some plans, because you can measure it all, and apply rates etc

cant go much deep than the back lane as the water would run in (i know what drains are by the way and i know they block)
I want it slightly higher than the lane, but that isnt a prob as out garden slopes up towards the house.
Plans: Can get them made up no prob.
I'll do some reading on laying foundations later on. I helped with some foundatins for a conservatory once, but that was years ago and i cant remeber shit about it.
10-15k seems reasonable, but i can knock a lot off that by doing stuff myself. I just want it build (bricks n roof) i can do the rest.

Foundations for a garage you are looking at 450mm below ground level
600x200 founds would be adequate without any reiforcing
you would want single skin blockwork with high and low vents.
For the roof prefab trusses (gang nail) would probably be easiest if you dont know a joiner but then they will not maximise head hieght. trusses with ties at high level are going to cost more £££
simple concrete floor should be 150mm thick on compacted hardcore, need to fit a DPM ( damp proof membrane) to stop dampness
roof will have to be tiled or slated to tie into surrounding area
There are lots of variants, i would make sure you buy good quality doors and window as you want it to be secure
Also got to think about RWP connecting to existing
Then there is electrics
If you plan spending alot of time working in it it might be worth your while thinking baout some insulation in the floor aswell
Best thing to do is find an architectural technician in your area that will do cash jobs and they should sort you out with all drawings and spec to allow for more accurate pricing

I would allow for getting a Structural Engineering consultancy involved.
Will be able to sort out foundation type and sizes for you, structural slab if you are going to be having lifting equipment on it, roof construction that will give you the most working space inside. etc.
Would need plans drawing up by an Architect then pass onto the Engineers who will make it stand up and produce drawings showing the slab and foundation construction and roof construction. Thats if you want a proper job.

I meant structural calculations, structual slab etc etc. Certainly don't need a consultant.
Simple foundations, concrete floor, block walls and trussed roof are standard stuff. Plans are exactly difficult either, probably wouldn't even need an architect depending on your skill with a pencil

My old mans a building manager and laughed at folk saying £15k to build a garage.
TBF he hasnt given much us much to go by. 15k is just a rough quote, price will vary alot if he is using decent facing bricks or concrete blocks; how deep he is planning to go with the footings and slab and if he'll mix by hand or get readmix. I'd say 15k an ok price down here but maybe up north building costs are cheaper

as Jake said 15k is a guide price to look at allowing for extras and depending what spec this garage needs to be, ie fully insulated, power points, good lighting etc, pit?
