Budget?
Use?

If its at home then you're better off building one from scratch. All depends what you'll use it for...

Agreed, build one yourself. Or get a NAS unit for a remote storage box.

I've got two of these as servers

Nice and compact, easy to upgrade and VERY quiet. They're called Asus Terminators

I cant really see the point in using servers at home myself. Depending on how many ppl are using computers it can be a right pain.

I have 2 PCs myself, the misses has a laptop and we have a media center downstairs.
We have 2 NAS devices with 1tb storage in total where we store backups, music and videos.

There is a point to using servers at home

My file server has 3x 500gb hard drives and 1x 160gb hdd

much easier to store downloads / music..etc on and share without slowing down the users main pc, and leave it on!

Wouldnt really be saving to be fair, the server doesnt have to be "much" of a spec, it has the componants from my main pc handed to it (and others) when i regulary upgrade my pc, so not really any expense there.

It has more functions than a simple NAS box which is there for once purpose, should I wish to venture down that route.

I paid 52 pounds per 500GB hard drive
and I paid 19 pounds for the 160GB hard drive brand new.

So that's 175 pounds for 1,660GB of space.
Electricity isnt much for it to keep running, has upgraded air cooling (testing oil cooling on my other server before i try it on this one )

So yeah... inexpensive, and always upgradeable.

Out of curiosity, how much is a 1TB or 2TB NAS box, then look at the limitations you have with it.

It's going to be used for testing for work. Also as a file server for home use using RAID. Possibly Raid 5.

Budget around £750.

Hi Andrew,

You dont need anything flash then, if you just want it to run server software to fuck about with anything at the 2Ghz mark will do the job, chuck in a gig of ram to keep it happy. Diskspace... well its cheap as chips these days so go crazy i say!

RAID... well again depends if you want to be flash or not, decent RAID cards go for alot of money.

all good points banni, but i've been on both sides. I use to have a FreeBSD box running multiple 120gb hard disks to store all my mp3s and movies and other legal files. In the end I binned it for a 500GB lacie network box-o-wires. Granted it doesnt do anything near what my FreeBSD box can do (everything) but it serves files over smb, ftp and most importantly doesn't make such a fucking racket! Plus uses less power. I just had enough and lost my buzzz

I probably should not use it as storage at this stage. Think testing is where it's at

Only thing stopping me getting a NAS box, is I want NFS support, and ext* filesystem instead of fat32, as most of the files I have are over the 2gb fat32 limit.
