Hi All,

Im after a redtop corsa and looking to spend about £2500 on one. I have found this one on pistonheads and spoke to the guy last night and all seems good. The engine has 80k, wheels are new, just been serviced, taxed and tested.

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/286012.htm

Do you think its worth £2,100 (offered him it) or do you think Im better leaving it and finding a better one?? Just want a second opinion before parting with cash.

Looks very tidy and it's the later engine

Id check it over thoroughly before you hand over any cash.

Check the EML works with the ignition and goes off as it should when she fires up.

Check for oil leaks (particularly the sump). Ideally you want him to let you start it up from cold so you can check for smoke from the exhaust on startup. (Stem seals)

Check theres no signs of black mush (oil) in the header tank (signs of porous head)

Basically check everything!!!

Cheers mate.

I have asked about oil leaks and he says there is a small one coming from the Sump (slightly cracked).

I will also check the other things you have mentioned.
But you think its worth the money.

Thanks pal.

I sold my GSi Redtop for £2000, it needed lots of work and he knew that but the the fact it would hit 140mph the kids face lit up and the sale was done.

Dont get taken in by this, they're great fun but they can be a money pit after all the engine is over 10yrs old and lets face it, you dont put a 2.0 in a corsa to drive it sensibly do you!

Ask him if he has receipts for the work done?
Ask if it taps from cold?
What gearbox is on it?
Does it have decent brakes?

When you drive it make sure the gears dont crunch, mine was starting to crunch going into 3rd (favourite gear! :lol synchro starting to go.

Take a mechanic friend with you to prod at everything to make sure its worth the money.

I bought a redtop off here about 5 months ago and kept it for 4 weeks due to company car.
I loved every minute of the redtop and loved the look on peoples faces when you left then standing at the lights.

I will speak to Chris Astley Motorsports in chorley about the price for a new sump.

the gearbox is a F20
the brakes are 2.0 brakes
he also has receipts for the work done on the car (I shall have a good look through them).

Id be interested to know how he has cracked the sump TBH

It does look tidy tho and provided what the advert says is correct, i would probably have paid £2100 for it myself.

i paid 2300 for mine from Mav and had no complaints or problems for over a year and a half of kickin the shit out of it.

then had a couple small problems then lost interest in it. then stripped it and sold the parts (much to the disgust of Mav no doubt) and made over 1k on the parts which aint bad.

if it runs good and looks good and you like it get it!

Later on uses a dispak instead of a dizzy and coil, different loom, if its on the original flywheel it will be the heavy one.

I've had both, not much difference but there a newer engine which is always better

Cheers for info guys, its much appreciated.

The only strange thing he said to me last night was that the car is on the log book as a 2.0 but he insures it as a 1.4? How does that one work because I thought the systems were all linked and would come up as a 2.0??

naa it may be a 2.0 on the log book but if you put the reg into your insurance company it will still come up as the origional engine size.

He's an idiot for insuring it as a 1.4 tho.
