not quite, as steve said sont did not want porn on bluray to begin, but since have let a few things through in regards to the adult industry. BetaMax was also by Sony... that failed.
To be honest though either format could still win, as alot of disc manufacturers are looking in making a dual-format disc which should play on both systems. There is actually very little between the formats so adapting in such a way is relatively easy.

And Betamax failed as it was considerably more expensive than what VHS was, even if it was higher quality...
Bluray may also be better capacity than HDDVD, but it is also more expensive too... Both in media and in the equipment to play/record

Judging by the Blu-Ray and HD sections in Virgin and Hooomv Blu-Ray is the preffered media.

The fact that theres a 50gb HD-DVD is largely irrelevant, considering a dual-layer Blu-ray can hold that already. If you consider the fact that they're planning to introduce a multi-layer Blu-ray that can store 250gb, whilst the highest capacity HD-DVD will only do 150gb, then it makes it even less impressive. The problem is that not many players will read much more than the dual-layer stuff at the moment, although they should work with the new 100gb Blu-rays

neither will win, they will hapily co-exist.
the old argument of vhs vs betamax isnt a fair comparison as there was no way you would ever have had a single small unit that would play both, so people had tt pick one. there are already players on the market which will play both blu-ray and hd-dvd and i completely believe most people will have a dual player or both players

I'm not on any particular side btw, but just remember that Blue-Ray supports lazy compression, meaning that 250GB of data on that disk could probably fit on the 150GB DVD anyway (which has very good compression capiblitlies i hear).
