try this:
create a folder on your desktop, right click it and click sharing.
On the sharing tab click something like 'I understand and enable file sharing'.

XP home or professional?
home has a funny way of dealing with sharing folders. Make sure "File and Printer sharing" is enabled in the Networks icon in Control Panel

Start by sharing a folder.
Create a new one somewhere on ya desktop. Right click -> Properties. Go to Sharing, click on "I understand the risks, enable file sharing" - DONT USE THE WIZARD.
Call the foler a shared name and press OK. Now try and find the PC from another one.
