I won't be buying it, I'm just trying to point Warren in the right direction (IMO), but if that's not allowed, I'll leave this thread alone.

I do understand that it has the potential to be a perfectly good, cheap solution, which may have no problems at all, as long as everything is assembled properly, and the mapping is good.

Robin, I did try to push you into saying why if I built it it wouldn't be upto standard but you didn't answer so I will explain.

I used to work in the Aeronautical industry so EVEYTHING you do must be signed off, by it being signed off it can be traced back to you indefinately. I used to make looms for the Avro RJ (formerly known as the 146) so you can say I am beyond competant at soldering.

From there I went into a different industry where I had to supervise 'batch monkies' and I wil say that they were on just above minimum wage and were working to timescales, I would hand on heart say that they were every bit as good as me on soldering but were expected to solder 12-15 wires per minute, I honestly couldn't do it at that rate. For you to say it is a guy in a shed is nothing short of ignorance.

wow, this has escillated!

thing is with MS it has been heard the that quality of the components isn't that great, but im not one to comment on that!

then as dave said this can ead to problems mapping it, if you map cars on a daily basis, when someone says MS you thing to the times the ecu has messed up causing you problems, taking longer, a map that should have taken 3-4hours takes 6-8hours, will the customer want to pay for that time, my guess is no, hes bought a cheap ecu to save money so he wont want to pay more to map it, hence alot of tuners wont tune it.

fair enough if you fancy a challenge then go for it, get the soldering iron out, im all for it! how else will you learn.

i know what ECU id get tho..... suppose it comes with working with standalone on a dialy basis, something others dont have the joy of doing.

first off this example on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=170170967774&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=007

'All our products, including carry a no quibble carriage paid TWO YEAR R.T.B. Warrenty'

the secondly i cant condole spending Ģ1000 on a ECU inc mapping on a less that Ģ1000 engine! on a corsa that would be worth around Ģ2000!!!!!

its interesting on the different views on who's used it and whos hasn't!

well 2 people that map ecu's have answered this thread, me and broster. both of us came to the same conclusion about megasquirt, that people that map ecu's dont like it and can have problems. If it was a s good as the manufacturers claim, for the price of it I would be buying, building and using it every day on customers cars. truth is it isnt great, many of the more expensive ecu's are bad enough and megasquirt is worse.

Please do not use mtechautomotive, use phil at extraefi.co.uk, he is cheaper, and the writer of the extra code for the ecu, offers a guarantee and plenty of help. The arguments about cheap components, hand built etc are, imo, bullshit. Like ian says, these are not built in a factory by an underpaid worker, they are individually crafted, by (from phil) a professional electrical engineer by trade. I'm speaking from experience, that must count for something over the 'presumptuous' comments.

Yep, that is an issue with them. Future versions should be improved.
The latest one at the minute has surface mount components too, which is better.

Iīm running a Megasquirt with my C16XE. Have been using it for about a year.

Itīs a very good ECU when built and configured right. Iīm using the old v2.2 board with some modifications. Iīve added the lm1815 board for the vr signal from the crank, made the necessary changes for spark output, added a circuit for shift light and for getting the rpm signal to the dials. The waste spark in c16xe is very easy to wire with MS.

I built my MS from a kit and I believe itīs a good thing to do if you want to know how it all works so you can repair and modify it. I started off with zero knowledge about engine management, and spent a fair amount of hours learning things by reading MS manuals and forums. So it is possible to make it work even if you only have basic soldering skills.

I would like to give a warning though. Donīt do it for your only car that you need every day. Or if you have to, do what I did. Make such a loom that you can easily change to the standard ECU if needed, if you donīt have throttle bodies or something else that canīt be used with the std ECU.

Btw. this is my second MS board. Burnt the first one when measuring some voltages on the board with power on and my hand slipped...

If you have the money, do what most people who havenīt even seen a MS in real life tell you to do, and get some expensive management system. Itīs a lot easier that way. If youīre like me and want to know how things work and donīt like to have other people poking your car, as it is your hobby to build it, then get the MS. It will do the job nicely.

the thing im trying to get accross is other management isn't always more expencive when you see what it comes with in comparison, and its often alot simplier ot use, no need to add extra plug ins etc!
