MK1 golfs are cool as fuk, finding a nice clean one aint easy though
1.6 is 110bhp, 0-60 in 9.1s

My mate is well in the know of mk1 golfs.
He told me to avoid the 1.6's as they aint very good. Always get problems with them.
He drives the 1.8 so obviously a little biased.
You'd be best goin on a vw forum and ask there.

this is a v.good buyers guide as i was looking at one shortly before xmas
http://freespace.virgin.net/mark.roddis/GolfWeb/Buying/Buying%20Mk1.htm
the 1.6's are more desirable for collectors, ie keeping it original as possible
the 1.8's are more sturdy, rust less & are more the modifyers car

Mk1 GTi = fun, but lacking toys.
Corsa GSi = toys, but lacking the rest.

The Mk 1 Golf is a very cool car - started the whole hot hatch craze. In a straight line, there'll not be much in it, but a standard Mk 1 Golf will easily lose a standard GSI Corsa round the twisty bits
