TBH mates and family friends will sort you out with bits of bobs if you let people know your moving out, EVERYTHING doesn't need to be brand new does it?

We started out buying little bits like when we saw Pyrex stuff on offer. We managed to get everything for a 2 bed house for less than 2k. Although we got a few bits like the ironing board and vacuum given to us (The vacuum was only £60 though and it does the job fine) we still managed to get a new TV, 360 and DVD player.
I've found quite a few good deals on Tesco Direct. We got 2 two seater sofas for less than £300 and the clubcard points you get for it always help with the shopping

i got kitchen type stuff over christmas and birthday after people knew i was looking for a house.

you must have some stuff at home already to take, bed, cupboard, tv etc.

also, freecycle is your friend. I've had tables, chairs, mirrors, tiles, gas bbq, tv, stereo's, loadsa crap from there. It's not necesarily the stuff that you'd choose yourself, but it fills a gap if you're on a budget
i don't think i spend any money at all when i moved out. actually: fridge, microwave, hoover think that's it.

me and the missus are moving in to our place in June 09, weve already started getting little bits together. At Christmas and birthdays we ask for money and vouchers (mainly Argos cos can get everything there) and we are stockpiling it all so weve got loads to spend.

£5k is a huge budget, when I budgeted ours it came to less than £2k for a 1 or 2 bedroom flat for the both of us, then take off any vouchers we had on top. Admittedly it wasnt best quality furniture, but remember its a rented house so you might get chucked out at the end of your contract, and will have nowhere to put your posh furniture
