Simple, most engines that are sold are coming from cars which are being broken for parts.
Clean examples aren't broken for bits as they are sought after but no-one wants to buy a ropey old shitter, so they sell the engines on at the same market price as every one else.
Simple fact is that if the car is in a situation where it is being broken, more often than not the engine has been neglected as well as the bodywork.
When was the last time you saw an advert for a C20XE from a GTE 16v where the seller says it is a low mileage cherished car in immaculate condition with FSH and few owners? Never.
Most have been hammered more than Ulrika Johnsons piss flaps and had even more 'owners' plus leak just as many fluids due to rough treatment.
