Because the site sets and checks a cookie on your machine for your user id and password on every page.

If you didn't have this cookie, it wouldn't know who you were and you wouldn't be logged in as you...

You wouldn't appear as being on here all night by the way...

After 20 mins the system auto closes your session and removes you from who's online, whether you log out or not...

Tools > Internet Options > Delete cookies

tools - internet options - delete cookies on general tab (if your running IE6 that is)
