Going to get myself a compression guage and do one of these on my car as its using a bit of oil and I want to diognose the problem.
Any tips for doing these compression tests. I was just going to follow the guide in the haynes manual as im not uber car mechanical
PS why do you have to hold the throttle open to do it? And should the engine be cold to run the test?
Cheers Gavin

Engine should be warm.
All four spark plugs out
Throttle wide open.

Why is the throttle to be wide open?
And is this why you take the relay out the fuel system to stop it flooding?

when ever ive done mine ive never had the throttle open at all and ive never taken the feul relay owt eighter i take 1 plug owt at a time just turn the engine ova a few times get my reading then replace the plug then on to the next one this is exactly how i did it on my let it was laid on the floor freezing cold and im still running it now 1 year later so i would say there is no problem doin it this way

Yer but if it was laying on the floor I assume it wasnt connected to a supply of fuel

hehe I know I was just been annoying
Thanks for the input, although I think if I do the dry part warm I will do the wet part the same as this will keep the results as accurate as possible

the way we do it is: take 1 plug out at a time and disconnct all the ht leads or what ever you have, so the engine can only crank over and not fire! there is no need to hold the throttle open! do dry compression tests 1st then use oil and test again.

disconnet cranks sensor - stops fuel being injected
remove ALL four plugs
Crank with throttle wide open
