I wouldnt go above a 50 weight oil, something like 10w50 or 15w50
Is it being used on the track or something?

use normal oil with wynns engine oil additive, it increases the viscousity of the oil and helps reduce engine wear, especially when cold. It's specially designed for older engines.

Would that not mean a thinner oil is better? Or have I got the wrong and end of the stick?

thats true, u cant really win on this one you can get thinner oil to stop tapping , but the use of having thicker oil is for leaky valve seals and worn rings so the oil cant pass as easy,

W stands for winter, its how the oil flows when its cold. a 0W40 oil will flow better than a 10W40 oil etc
Then both oils are the same thickness at 100 degrees
