Is this safe enough to do. My car is like this and is quite bouncy, and my mate (mechanic) suggested that i should get custom shocks "just in case".
Any views on this folks?

Typical symptoms. The shockers will be quite soft, and the springs will be stiffer than standard, hence the bouncing.
Not the best for ride qualtity. You won't need custom shocks. Just shorter/stiffer ones i.e. Spax, Koni etc.

The thing is i dont really mind it being bouncy, are there any other detrimental effects to keeping the standard shocks on?

standard shocks will eventually wear becuase of the increased weight put on them.
best changing the dampers mate, handling will be a bit better as well.
