Intel Q6600 G0 Stepping

PSU is a toss up between a Zalman ZM600 (600w), Seasonic M12 (700w), Corsair TX (750W) or a Tagan TG800-U33 (800w).
Rough price is around £900 (overclocker prices) which is about 300quid more than im wanting to spend  but my current system is dying (i think my current tagan PSU has blown a capacitor as it's restarting and BSOD'ing all over the show) so need to replace it.
But does it seem like a good spec? Is there anything i could replace that would cut the costs slightly? - im not a huge gamer, play a bit of CS (1.6) and BF2124 and that's about it, just trying to spec up something that'll last a while like my current XP3000 system

Is the TX modular? If so I'd just get the cheapest out of the two if there's a big difference.
Both would be fairly quiet.
If you join up with hexus.net, you can get free P&P with scan.co.uk, which supply decent enough prices.
I usually find ebuyer and scan to be cheaper than overclockers, but the spec is very nice.

with regards to the PSU, im wanting something decent enough that could possibly power a water cooling setup, hence why i looked at the Tagan (higher wattage etc) but i know the seasonics get brilliant reviews and voltages seem to be very stable.
cheers for the headups with hexus and yeah, the price is rough as i know overclockers aren't the cheapest and i probably could save £100 hunting around, but im curious if my setup is a little excessive for what i need? Though on the other hand i know it'll last me a while and has the potential for decent overclocking.

Sounds like a good setup to me although for a system thats got gonnabe used much for games, £900 is abit much imo.
I built my system for £1000 and its a gaming system which at the time was pretty high spec.

What you looking to use this system for?
As unless you are going to be using some highly multithreaded apps I would suggest going for the new Intel Core 2 E8400 (or the E8200 if you want to cut costs a little). The E8400 easily outperforms the Q6600 in gaming, and it overclocks just as good (if not better).

Cosmo - Typical browsing/email, a little bit of CS 1.6/BF2142 but mostly music engineering/composing (more CPU and RAM intensive over anything else).
The only reason i was looking at the Q6600 is that i've seen it overclock pretty well and i was hoping it would last me longer than a dual core.
I assume the new Wolfdale's are 45nm? - so it should be cooler and more efficient powerwise?
Would you say i would notice much difference between a Q6600 and a E8200 (which is around 30 quid cheaper)?
£900 is a lot, though £160 of that is just a on case Although a similar spec on ebuyer (2GB Ballistix, ASUS 8800GT difference) is around £760 and im sure i could save a fair bit if went down the 2nd hand route (off overclockers forum etc which is a little less risky than ebay).

I havent seen the compared directly, only the E8400 and the Q6600. But given the way the E8400 was better than the Q6600 in everything other than highly multithreaded apps, I would guess that once overclocked the E8200 would also be atleast JUST as good.
And yeah, they are 45mn, and run much more efficiently than the Q6600.
If you did want/need to go Quadcore then I'd say wait until the Yorkfield Core 2 Quads are released soon...although these will more than likely be over £200 so not going to save you money

yeah, i've read reviews and they are suppose to be the dogs dangles but the E8400 is around £30 more than the Q6600, which puts it out of the question (as im trying to save cash rather than spend more ), but the E8200 is a little cheaper but not sure what the performance hit would be over a Q6600, if any.
Plus i've just read than intel are cutting prices on the 20th april and the Q6700 (2.6GHz Quad core) should be available for similar money as the Q6600 is currently, around £150. The Q6600 is said to go down to around £110. And the Q6700 is a better overclocker than the Q6600 with having the 10x multiplier (instead of 9x of the Q6600) and Q6850 speeds are apparently a piece of piss to reach.
Bottom line is, im now confussed as buggery

Its one of those - should I wait - type of situations...but then if you do that something else will be just around the corner when you come to buy it. Especially with Intel who seem to be throwing new products out everyday

i know, thats the problem - should i wait nearly a month for these price cuts or should i buy stuff now. And from reading around it seems to be very little difference (perhaps a few FPS here and there in games) between a Q6600 and a E8200 clocked at 3GHz, apart from a few FPS here and there and a cooler (and therefore potentially quieter) CPU.
im now thinking about buying an old power pc G5 (Quad 2.5GHz G5 PPC can be had for £500-600) and sodding the games all together, atleast i know it'll work with my protools rigs and it'll be bloody stable

Dom, im looking at getting a new PC myself.
The route im considering is, buying a Dell XPS machine for £640 then in approx 2 months time going to purchase one of the new ATI 4xxx range graphics cards.

It comes with the 8800GT which will do me until june/july for the next gen ATI.
Now I could get the same machine with a very nice 8800 GTX for around the £900, but the ATI are set to be outstanding cards.
To put it in perspective, the average GPU clock speed is 600mhz and memory @ 1800mhz (gddr3) and approx 112/256 stream processors.
The ATIs are looking to be dual cores running at 1050mhz (over a gig on the gfx card!!) and memory at 2200mhz (GDDR5) with 480 stream processors.
If you dont follow that, they are very powerful
