Hi there. Does Windows have inbuilt LAN messaging features (for comps on the same workgroup)? Ive had a look around and cant get much to work...

Yes, XP has netsend. However if you have Service Pack 2 installed (which you should), the service will be disabled.

You need to enable the "Messenger Service" on the computers you want to have send and receive messages from.

Ah ok, i thought it might be netsend, its good that its disabled because it stops those annoying ad pop ups, ta anyway

Theres a command line thing you can use to activate it, just looking for it in my loads of batch files

You can activate the service on all your client computers from Active Directory

Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\System Services.

Computers in this OU will obviously need a restart to apply the new policy

Yeah thats the way i did it. Just pissed about with my LAN at home to learn.
