Did that with just one off camera flash. Obviously you wont want a garage as a background if your doing your gf

if hes doing the g/f then i gues it should be in the bedroom - hehe,
My lmited knowledge would say try an get a nice light, Not room light as nautural light should hit the face square on and not from above. Maybe some distant lamps with shades...
Portraits need plain ish backrounds but stil with the subject in great focus.
I was tod to always focus on the eyes, Ensure that she is happy and that she does not look "posed"
The best portait shots are of the "Model" feeling natural , relaxed and happy...
If your happy, you vibe will bounce to her and ensure she is happy.

yeah Gaz thats what I was thinking, shes a tough cookie cause she doesnt like pics of her anyway
it probably will be in her room actually caus she has a dimmer switch and plain cream walls
Focus on the eyes then, I suppose alot of it is in her court really as she is the picture
would you use a tripod?

yes i would, as she will be still... but move the tri pd about and in your warm up pictures, find the best lighting to her face...
Warm up, Snap some that you would like to be your mains (serious pictures), the warm down (I.e piss about and have a laugh)
I bet you first set and last set will be your favs.

imperfections can add character.
i find if not done properly, BnW portraits are stale and boring.
Over/under-saturated/dodged/burnt colour 'traits can be very emotive and effective, if tailored to suit the model.

Sounds like a guy who was just trying to make it sound more complicated than it is. A lot of wankers on photography forums which is why i don't go on them

Warm up & down. He's not a pro
Natural side light is best and use a plain backgound or something that isn't cluttered that could distract. Make sure the eyes are pin sharp, and remember to enjoy it.

mine was a brown bedsheet pinned to the wall and a desk lamp. I like the photos only theres unwanted shadows but not to bad for a desk lamp

I did the shoot in raw so I was able to tweak exposures and overlay different variables etc. Maybe overlay isnt the best word but you get the idea.
Yeah, just a brown bedsheet. pinned up.
The lamp was on a table next to here. would love a lighting rig but thats a lot of money.
Good look Matt, just give it a shot see how it goes. Least if its the mrs, she'll have patience and just say you'll reward here after
