The Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens or the Fuji FinePix S9600? thinking of upgading to a better camera after viewing some of the pictures some of youhave taken and just wondering which one of the above two is best.

No worries.

D40 is going to last you much longer as you will be able to buy new lenses/equipment for it as you progress.

D40 by a mile, although you will have to spend to get the 300mm zoom range of the 9600.
