6k is more legal and more white
8k is more blue
I have the 8k kit on mine and its great
If its standard headlights yes they use H4 bulbs
And yes most H4 kits are hi/lo kits

would just the 6000k bulb kit make much difference over standard and look close to the more expensive HID kit?

A brighter bulb kit will be better than normal, but wont be near as bright as a hid kit There well worth getting

6000K is the most common one for production cars that come with HIDs as standard IIRC
look miles better than the normal setup
