The silver one is the thermostat.
And the other is your SAI to do with emmissions iirc
When the engine is really cold, it comes on using the exhaust gases to circulate back into the car to warm it up quicker.
I think that's how it works anyway!

Of course they do something, they wouldn't be there otherwise.
The silver one isn't the thermostat, thats just to the left of it (the one with the water pipe going into it)
The things you've arrowed is the SAI (secondary air injection pump)
When the engine is cold it sends warm air from the manifold to the cat, to warm it up quicker to reduce emissions.

Both are to do with a device which is like a fan, and basically pumps fresh air into the exaust........
You will hear it when you start your car, cold and go off after about 5 mins.
It basically put fresh air into your exahaust so that the percentage of engine fumes is lower. This is because when the engine is running cold the emmisions are higher and would not pass regulations without the device

As far as i know the bigger thing you circled is the electric fan and the silver thing is just a valve (no idea what it does )

both of these can be got rid of if you are going to put a 4-2-1/4-1 manifold on

The thing you call black is the sai(secondary air injection) pump which only kicks in when the engine is coldfor 5 mins max, this is to put through the exhaust system to warm the cat up so it can be more effiecient sooner rather than later so the emissions are reduced, and yes you can take this off as it is only really useful in other countries as they have more strict emissions tests,
the shiny thing is the sai non return valve, this is used in conjunction with the sai to obviously let the air run one way, you can only take this off if you weld the hole up in the manifold after youve removed it or get an after market system, so you will need to keep that on as it will just blow exhaust fumes out as it will have noting to block it
