Im currently on the look out for something to replace the micra, and the puma was top of my list.....
Just to bump this, I ended up buying a puma, 2002 1.7, unfortunately in red but the car was low miles and good condition and no rust.
Its great, puts a smile on my face everytime I get to a B road, always looking for the "scenic" route.
I can only recommend one, you will struggle to find a bad review of one. and there is a buyers guide in the months top gear title "future classic"
The cars themselves seem to have a few "niggles", but you don't mind them.

my mum has the millenium edition one (yellow, black leather recaro interior, limited edition, and 1.7 petrol engine) very nice car to be fair, hate the dash, but it shifts well enough

^^ thats the thing, 90% of the other puma owners I see are middle aged women (no offence to your mum).
Who more that likely don't use the car to its full potential.

not that fast, 7.8 I think. the normal puma is 8.5 (I haven't checked those)
however the puma I have "feels" quick, its great to drive and the handling is brilliant, the fun factor overshadows the 0-60 imo.
however I looked at the racing puma, and couldn't really justify paying the extra.
Evo magazine says something like
Ford Puma +everything -nothing, even the 1.4 is worth a look
ford racing puma +exclusivity -expense, the standard puma does it so well
